LHSBR webinar: Workforce Safety - What we have learnt from depot accidents

Deaths within the railway hit all within the railway family hard. We all want to learn and make a positive difference from such tragic events, and do what we can to stop them from happening again. It is no doubt that this is part of the reason that our railway is one of the safest in Europe.

The rail industry has identified that issues need to be addressed nationally to improve depot safety and its operations. Concern around the effectiveness of the recognition and management of depot safety hazards were highlighted by three depot fatalities in the last seven years, each in very different circumstances.

The POSG Depot Working Group is active in pushing depot health and safety forward and works with industry leaders to spread learning, and develop activities to improve health and safety outcomes for those working in depots. We hope there is much to learn from this webinar to help prevent fatalities in the future.

Within this webinar we will consider and discuss:
- Depot health and safety from the perspectives of those organisations that have suffered depot fatalities.
- What the organisations did next to learn from their investigations?
- What controls they needed to improve.
- At West Marina, electrical safety was the key concern; and from Tyseley, it was worker movement around depots.

Our panel will include the following speakers:
- Seamus Scallon – Operations & Safety Director, FirstRail; and Chair of POSG Depot Working Group
- Steve Enright – Director of Safety, Sustainability and Security at Abellio Transport Group Limited
- Ross Balcombe – Head of Engineering Compliance at Southeastern
- Phil Barrett – Head of Safety and Operations Development at Rail Delivery Group

This webinar is particularly aimed at all those with depot responsibilities, MDs, health and safety experts, operations managers and depot staff.
