Over the last five years there have been five track worker fatalities: 2021 Surbiton, a track patroller; 2020 Roade, a COSS; 2019 Margam, two track workers; 2018 Stoats Nest, a track worker placing protection. There have also been three further fatalities within depots: 2020 Eastleigh Depot, a rail loading operative; 2019 Tyseley Depot, a train driver; 2017 Old Oak Common Depot , a train maintenance worker.

As an industry we need to develop and maintain a shared leadership from across the industry to support a clear focus on workforce safety initiatives and embed ongoing improvements to reduce workforce safety risk.
